Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between NPS and EPS?

NPS (National Pension System) is a voluntary, market-linked retirement savings scheme where you contribute during employment and receive pension after retirement. EPS (Employee Pension Scheme) is a defined benefit scheme under EPFO where employer contributes 8.33% of basic salary, providing fixed pension based on service years and pensionable salary.

How is EPS pension calculated?

EPS pension = (Pensionable Salary × Service Years) / 70. Pensionable salary is average of last 60 months basic + DA. Maximum pensionable salary is ₹15,000 per month, and maximum service years considered is 35 years. For service beyond 20 years, additional 2% of pensionable salary is added per year.

What are the tax benefits of NPS?

NPS offers triple tax benefits: Section 80CCD(1) - up to ₹1.5 lakh under overall 80C limit, Section 80CCD(1B) - additional ₹50,000 deduction, and Section 80CCD(2) - employer contribution up to 10% of basic salary (no monetary limit). Up to 60% of corpus withdrawal is tax-free at maturity.

How much family pension do dependents receive?

Under EPS, family pension is 25% of the member's pension amount payable to spouse/nominee. For the first 7 years or until the member would have attained 58 years (whichever is earlier), enhanced family pension equal to full member's pension is paid, after which it reduces to standard family pension rate.
