Gratuity = (Last drawn salary × 15/26) × Number of years of service. Last drawn salary includes basic salary + dearness allowance. For each completed year of service, you get 15 days of last drawn salary as gratuity.
Under the Payment of Gratuity Act, you need minimum 5 years of continuous service with the same employer. However, this requirement is waived in case of death or disability.
Gratuity received by government employees is fully exempt from tax. For private sector employees, the least of the following is exempt: Actual gratuity received, ₹20 lakhs, or 15 days' salary for each completed year of service.
If you change jobs before completing 5 years with the same employer, you typically don't receive gratuity. However, some companies may have more generous policies. Our calculator helps you understand your exact entitlement based on your specific situation.
